Business divas in York unite! The first event organised by new business venture Dynamic Business Divas (DBD) takes place on Monday evening, in the shape of a speed networking session at the York Marriott Hotel management centre.
Four York-based business women launched DBD last month “to fill a gap in the market by offering a wide range of business and personal support to working women”.
Sixteen members signed up to the notion of setting up “masterminding groups” within a larger networking framework in York and North and East Yorkshire, and the plan is to attract hundreds over the next year.
Already it has attracted numerous sponsors, including Lloyds TSB, the York Marriott Hotel, Drivers Solicitors in Bootham, White Kite accountants of Fulford and Voot Communications near Pocklington.
Lisa Hogg, of business support firm Chrisalis Services, of Sheriff Hutton, is managing director of the new organisation.
She said: “The DBD masterminding groups will be limited to groups of six people, none of whom will be competitors and all will be bound by confidentiality agreements.
“Members will set themselves business or personal goals, which will be achieved through accountability to others in the group, and the provision of moral and practical support an d encouragement.”
Her fellow founders are Judy Illing, of Ametrine Solutions, Huntington (operations director), Liz Clark, of The Wedding Guide in Haxby (finance director) and Lynn Gregory, of Infinite Potential of Acomb (development director). The four friends met through being active members of WiRE (Women in Rural Enterprise), which led to them forming their own masterminding group in January 2008 – a mini-board advising each other on aspects of their ventures.
It was such a success they formalised it as a business.
Lisa said: “Our concept of masterminding is very new and not yet done up here in the north of England, but very successful all over the world.
“The DBD concept recognises that work and personal life are inextricably linked, especially for women who have home responsibilities.
“We also thought it was important to include women in employment, as well as those who are running their own business.”
Eventually the founders hope to create a national network by franchising the DBD concept to other like-minded businesswomen around the country.
Registration for the speed networking event at The York Marriott, in Tadcaster Road, starts at 6.45pm and closes at 9 pm.
